Karen Baxter – Baxter Canvas
I started sewing Sails back in 1978 in Islamorada in the Florida Keys. I co-owned a sail loft called Freedom Sails – and we made most everything for sailboats – Cushions, Sail covers, Bags, Windsocks, Bimini tops, Dodgers, etc. (Article to collaborate this)
In 1986 I moved to Maui – and my husband and I started our own windsurfing company called Hawaiian Pro Line and a few years later we started our kiteboarding company called Airush. Both companies are well known worldwide. Soon after I started my own sewing loft and continually made prototypes for both our businesses – windsurfing and kiteboarding.
In 2007 we sold our windsurfing and kiteboarding businesses – and I expanded my sewing loft and started making Commercial Awnings, Sun Shades, Roll-Ups, Custom BBQ Covers, Boat Cushions, Boat Covers, Chair covers, etc.
My most recent work is making boat cushions for the “Maui Jim Sunglasses” Luxury Yacht in Lahaina Harbor. A BBQ Cover for a million-dollar home in Wailea and even a door cover for another million-dollar home in Wailea – which was a first!
Custom is my thing. I love it. Hot Rod Seat Covers, Outside Sauna Cover, Sailing Canoe Trampoline, Wedding Tents. You name it – I’ve probably made one. And if I haven’t – I’m ready!
I also have my own bag line called Maui Bags, and my own custom line called Only Originals Maui.
